Openreach will be permanently turning off the UK’s PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) on 31st January 2027. They are adding new technology across the UK to ensure people can migrating old phone lines onto VoIP services.
What’s going to change?
All services that run over the old network will be discontinued. This includes traditional phone lines, ADSL and FTTC connections.
Instead, most areas will look to using a full-fibre connection. Openreach plans to bring FTTP services to more areas in the UK. This will make it easier for people to get a fast and reliable internet connection.
How will this affect my broadband?
Openreach’s goal is to provision more and more premises with FTTP to give businesses the opportunity to move onto the fibre network.
Opting for a full fibre internet connection will ensure that you have a more reliable connection, that will not be affected by distance or wear and tear. There are different speeds available so you can ensure you have enough bandwidth to support your business.
How will this affect my phone service?
You won’t be able to make calls using the old network after the PSTN switch-off in 2027. If you have an ISDN or PSTN line, you will have to migrate to an IP system.
